New Edit for October: Time Bandits – Live It Up

EditudeCity 9

Hi crew,

I’m excited to be posting the ninth installment in our EditudeCity edit/remix series. This one is a punchy, poppy remake of the Time Bandit’s 1982 Classic “Live It Up”. The band was formed in 1981 by Dutch born Alides Hidding, who wrote all songs and sang lead vocals. The band’s four albums made the charts all over the world, establishing a presence on the American dance music scene by topping the charts with this jam.

I’ve always had a sweet spot for this synth-heavy monster but several things make it tricky to play out in a club context: First, the original is extremely unquantized, making beat matching a distant reality for most DJ’s. Second, the guitar-ridden, overly-energetic uplifting chorus (which appears three times throughout the track) pushes the lines of cheesy in my opinion. Finally, the amazing breakdown at the end rarely gets heard as it doesn’t come in until the very end of the arrangement.

So, this version is now DJ friendly after being given the 4/4 quantization treatment. An entirely new kick drum has been compressed into the final mix for extra dance-floor punch. The track has been completely restructured to bring the incredible breakdown more to the forefront, as well as to build anticipation to one instance of the chorus versus three. Finally, extensive cuts, effects, and edits have been sprinkled throughout the arrangement to build anticipation and add some extra interest.

I hope you enjoy and share!

Street Sounds
Disco Party

That’s right!! We have your disco needs covered ALL WEEKEND LONG with a double header of funk! Friday night is our monthly vintage dance music freak-out Street Sounds!! Saturday night we have a special, one-night-only Disco theme night featuring the formidable record collections of two long-time Twin Cities DJ pioneers: Jobot and Jeff Dubois.

Too sweeten the pot even further, we are honored to feature Attitude City co-founder and DJ extraordinaire Davey Lahteenmaa – all the way from Montreal! He will be performing BOTH NIGHTS!!

Both shows will be located in First Ave’s VIP room… We look forward to seeing you there!!

Also – new for August and fresh off the presses is our latest Attitude City edit: This one is an unabashedly indulgent, maximum-funk, bass overload mutation of the vocal and instrumental versions of the (to me) unknown act Armenta’s 1983 single “I Wanna Be With You.”

Also – Hot off the virtual presses, here’s the newest edit/rmx from Editude City. This one gives a proper moogy backrub to a before-overlooked Herbie Hancock album cut from 1982. Lots of chops, cuts, extra drums, synth sprinkles and a frenchy breakdown are the key players this time round. Many thanks to the discopedic Joseph Colbourne for the introduction to this beauty.

REEEEMIX: Bella Koshka’s “Relic”

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

Bella Koshka LadiesAbout a year ago, local Minneapolis sonic magicians Bella Koshka and boogie-driven Attitude City lingered over a few cocktails and tossed around the idea of doing a remix of one of Bella Koshka’s songs.

Presenting our take on Bella Koshka’s “Relic” from their debut release “Slow Dancing on the Ocean Floor”.

We took some of our favorite vocal hooks from the original piece, smothered them in layers of washing reverb, and added a dark, moog-infused dance-floor-ready backdrop.

We hope you like.
