Well it’s official – Attitude City is now coast-to-coast with members in Montreal, New York City, Minneapolis, and now…. San Francisco.

That’s right – for those of you not in the know; Karl Frankowski has spread his wings and relocated to San Francisco. Rest assured he will be spreading the Attitude City funk around one of the most disco-centric cities on earth.

For those of us in Minneapolis – we will be keeping the Attitud…e City vibe strong. The plan? A refocus on the music that inspired Attitude City’s formation in the first place (vintage disco, funk, r&b and house blended with modern underground dance bangers) coupled with the new-found opportunity to work with other inspiring DJ’s around town.

To start things off proper I’m very excited to be DJ’ing this month alongside a guy I’ve wanted to work with for a long time: Millions Billions. His impeccable taste, mind-boggling variety, and stellar mixing skills make him one of the most versatile and talented DJ’s in town!

See you on the dance floor.

The third in a trilogy of long forgotten mixes comes at a timely moment. Montreal has lately been alive with disco activity instigated by a few groups of individuals. One of our favourite gang of gentlemen have been the boys belonging to the Cocktail Club Soundsystem. A couple of weeks ago, they brought in the Muscle and Heat five-some from Toronto. The music was so exceptional that we invited them to play with us the next night at Montreal’s Casa del Popolo. I was then reminded of a mix we all did last year.

The idea was simple…everyone picks a couple tracks -some of our favourites of any genre. One lucky chap gets to assemble them all together, then ta-da, a journey equal to a dog-sled race across the Canadian North!

Rex awoke from a dream in which 4 howler monkeys were drumming a Reichian lullaby on new set of Corning Vision cookware. The days were getting on with themselves earlier and the blue of the sky was the same as his favorite jeans, the same fade to a lighter shade on the edge closest to the street. The visions lingered longer than usual, or at least the sound of them. Focusing a little further out of the window he saw the source of the rhythms as many drops of melted ice ran down his neighbour’s shed and onto a metal garbage bin. Then he remembered the previoius night.

He had left against all warnings of his brothers and gone to the disco. All alone, without their accompaniment, advice, poisoning, ruining, he followed a girl he saw on the metro. They had stared at each other for what seemed like ages, through the kid-scratched windows of two adjoined carriages, each of them refusing to make the first blink. That’s how it all began. At the club, it took awhile to get the message, but eventually he realized very deeply that it was what he was searching for all along: love.

He wondered at the repercussions of his actions. Would the love he wanted to give Stephanie result in a hate that the Black Roses gang would surely want to give him? Would his courage to do something different inspire something hidden deep inside any of the other members? At least his new life was accompanied by a new soundtrack, and like the sounds he heard this morning, it was the music of a bright new day.

Taken from the Montreal Gazette (January 26, 2010):

Yesterday, workers from the City of Montreal found something unexpected as they cleared thick ice buildup on Cedar Avenue which winds around the south side of Mount Royal.

“As we chipped away at the ice that was beginning to become a danger for area drivers, we found a square metal box, apparently used for carrying records,” said Pierre Lafontaine, head of the crew working that day. “Inside, there were about 30 disco, funk and boogie records.”

Also a surprise for these new treasure hunters, 3 dj mixes from the Attitude City Montreal team that have been recorded over the past two years! Sources say they were never posted anywhere because the box and its contents were stolen by local hoodlums from the Black Roses Ski-Doo Club and later discarded during a scuffle with authorities. The mixes will be released one each week to avoid congestion on the inter-web.

“I’m so glad to have the recordings back,” said a relieved Davey Lähteenmaa, member of Attitude City and arranger of the mixes. “I’ve learned my lesson to post these mixes as soon as I make them so that this sort of thing never happens again. They are times like these when I’m glad those Black Roses goons have such bad taste in music!”
