On that most auspicious of dates Friday the 13th, Jupiter Room opens its doors to the dueling discotheque camps of Montreal’s Loose Joints & All-Rounder. Prepare for a four-on-the-floor electronic spectacle that will highlight all the hydra-headed sub-genres and bastard children of disco – from Italo to proto-house, from galactic inner space jams to silken electro-funk rhythms.
The All-Rounder is the Saturday residency at Korova, hosted by Jay Watts III (Baile Montreal) and featuring a rotating cast of guest DJs from across Montreal’s mirror-balled universe. By strange twists of fate, Jay has opened for Cut Copy, Cadence Weapon, Islands, and Broken Social Scene.
The Loose Joints audio crew is comprised of Attitude City members David Shaw and Davey Lähteenma, a duo who’ve honed their skills in parties across Montreal and the continent, starting as nearly-legal teen DJs in their home town of Thunder Bay. Now at the helm of the good space-ship Loose Joints, they combine a keen crate-digger’s knowledge of left-field disco history from Frisco to Rome with dance-floor alchemy. The LJ crew have brought legendary heads like DFA’s Hercules & Love Affair, Mike Simonetti, Dan Selzer and John Selway to Montreal while maintaining residencies and spinning at a variety clubs, leaving their mark on Tokyo, Le Social and Saphir, to name just a few. Loose Joints’ resident ocular rockstar Video Droid will be on hand to bend your rods and cones into fantastic shapes, manning all manner of analogue visual wizardry.
Long story short: really good music, great space, and amazing visuals that don’t involve looping clip art. 5 bucks.
