AC_MSP: Mega Party Time this Saturday October 25 feat. David Shaw / Montreal

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Party Time

Woah! Live and direct from Montreal we are importing Attitude City godfather David Shaw for your Saturday night party-time pleasure. Why?

1) Because Dave is one of the most fantastic DJ’s on the planet. The guy’s record collection is capable of making any serious vinyl aficionado weep. He knows how to play a rocking show. He’s also one of the funniest, nicest, most charming dudes you’ll ever meet. So if you haven’t heard him before – do yourself a favor and check this out! Listen to a set of Dave playing live in Montreal by clicking here.

2) Because its Jeff Dubois’ birthday — and we all know how sloppy this guy gets behind the turntables after he’s shotgunned one too many beers… So to spare you from having to listen to that nonsense, you get to hear Dave relieve him once he’s cut off.

3) Because we love you and we want you to be happy.

Clubhouse Jager & Attitude City are footing the bill for this show for your listening pleasure. That means no cover! Come down with your dancing shoes on to enjoy a party hosted by international veteran DJs spinning timeless dance music mined from the vaults of aural heaven.

Disco’s Dead – David Shaw live in MTL

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Disco's Dead

When it comes to posting DJ mixes on the Internet, some purists think that posting a live set is a death sentence because then the 14 people who actually care about the quality of the mixing will over-analyze everything and then proceed to bitch about flawed beat-matching and the other “problems” that can result from playing live while intoxicated.

That said, we at Attitude City prefer our sets to sound natural… aka drunk, sloppy, and raw (insert witty comment about our lifestyles here)… so we’ve decide to start recording more of our live performances for your listening pleasure.

To start things off right, here is an insane vinyl-only set from our beloved Attitude City co-founder and pimp extraordinaire – David Shaw . Personally, I think this is as good as it gets. Did I mention he will be here in Minneapolis Saturday October 25, 2008 to kick you smack in the middle of your musical booty? So partake in some inebriations, pretend you are at a sweaty Montreal club with your sexy significant other and enjoy.

AC MTL: Hercules & Love Affair After Party. Sunday, Oct 19th

Hercules

HERALD (to the gods):

Oh gods, hear my prayer! Dionysus, let Mount Royal bear richly with wine-swollen grapes in this early autumn season. Induce both mirth and delirium among the people who live in the modest mount’s shadow. Apollo, bring your lyre to the Cavern of Les Saints and the wild Zoobizarre, where lions, monkeys, foxes, cheetahs and birds of every rainbow colour dance to the beautiful music you inspire in all the minstrels of the world. Swift Hermes, send forth the message to all the peoples who revel in merriment, music and madness: Hercules and Love Affair hath returned!

(to the townspeople):

Be it known that indeed, on this Day of Sun, Hercules and Love Affair, complete splendid troupe appear at the hallowed Cavern of Les Saints. Shining trumpets shall blare to the heavens and drums shall cause even Hades to quake in his lair. The voices of angels shall bring heaven down to earth and the throbbing bass shall keep the dancers in step. Though there shall also be more…

Long after Night has thrown her starry veil over the rich lands, when the Cavern of Les Saints has transformed itself into an empty dwelling of faint phantasms, the great captain of Hercules and Love Affair, bright eyed Andy Butler, son of Butlaridae, son of Bottarus calls forth all to the after the celebration! All wild animals nocturnal and hungry for more of the god’s great bounty gather at the sacred Zoobizarre where the torches still blaze! He calls forth all legions of men who don’t sleep, fair women with an eternal connection with the moon to beat their fists to the drum while the rest of the townspeople sleep in restless dreams. Until Hemera of the daylight causes all the magic blackness to scatter, Erebus, god of darkness and shadow invite all to spin and whirl and cry, cry in triumph, carry on the dancing on and on!

Freaks & Geeks,

We’ve received a flood of emails saying that the last mix (Street Sounds) was intermittently not working. Sooooooooooooo we uploaded it to a new location. Enjoy!

Also — Currently on the front page of City Pages under the “Slideshow” section is a showcase of our first “Street Sounds” monthly @ the First Ave V.I.P. room. We know you have nothing better to do — so check it out by clicking here.

Finally, please don’t forget to mark your social calendar for our next MSP-based show: Saturday October 25 at the beautiful Clubhouse Jager. Per usual, we will be stuffing our record bags with the sweetest disco, funk, 80’s, electro, italo, and soul… and also some extra cans of beer to shotgun! This party will be in honor of Jeff Dubois’ birthday — and it will be funny watching him getting too drunk to mix properly. So show up with your party-game on!

AC_MSP: New Dance Night – The Roots!

Tuesday, October 7th, 2008

Party Yo!

Yo! We are record collectors first and DJ’s second. This is a rare opportunity for us to showcase the true origins of dance music. Expect to hear obscure audio gems that propelled an entire legion of dance enthusiasts around the time you were three years old.

Burlesque of North America, Attitude City, and l’Etoile Magazine proudly present Street Sounds Swirlin Through My Mind: a new monthly dance night dedicated to classic dance music from the mid 1970s – mid 1980s. Expect to hear everything from percussion-heavy disco to early Chicago house and acid tracks, early 1980s Minneapolis funk and boogie, and danceable rock and new wave tunes made popular at groundbreaking NY clubs Paradise Garage and The Loft.

On the turntables will be Karl Frankowski and Jeff Dubois, better known as stalwart Minneapolis DJs Attitude City. For several years, Attitude City has been throwing afterparties, warehouse jams, and their annual Yacht Club party, masterfully mixing classic disco and boogie, electro, house, and techno for a loyal fanbase. Joining Karl and Jeff will be DJ Mike the 2600 King & Winship of the BRLSQOTHEQUE Sound System. Mike is most well known for his funk and psychedelic mix CDs and uptempo dance remixes which have landed him gigs in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Portland, and Seattle. He is also one of the two resident DJs at the monthly Baby Loves Disco event. Wes Winship, Mike’s partner at local graphic design and screenprinting studio Burlesque of North America, has been tearing it up at local parties Too Much Love, Hotel at Kitty Kat Club, and Burlesque’s own weekly Triple Double party at Triple Rock Social Club, spinning everything from Italo disco to contemporary electro.

As we’ve watched the local DJ and dance party scene explode over the last several years and have seen new DJs sprout up every week spinning all the hot new electro-clash, Baltimore club, and blog house remix-of-the-moment mp3s, Street Sounds will serve as a refreshing escape: a simpler brand of party with veteran DJs spinning timeless dance music.
