ATTITIDE CITY…4 hour set!!

Before there were Moon Goons, before there was Too Much Love, and before the recent hipster influx in MPLS there was Attitude City. DJs Karl Frankowski and Jeff Dubois have been throwing some of Minneapolis’ best dance parties collectively as Attitude City since early 2005 and can often be heard masterfully mixing classic disco, boogie, funk, electro, and house for a very loyal fan base. From planting a radio transmitter at the King & I and encouraging patrons to tune into their live sets tableside via vintage boomboxes to their annual fashion-focused Yacht Party soiree, Attitude City have been consistently putting a unique and amusing spin on an often overly-serious underground dance music scene.
Before the formation of Attitude City, both DJ’s were already highly accomplished and successful independently. Karl’s origins can be traced far back in the Minneapolis dance community. Formerly known as Karl Who, Mr. Frankowski was one of the most prominent house DJ’s in
the twin cities dating back to the late 90’s. His numerous club
appearances, masterful mixing techniques, and mixed CD’s have helped to shape and define Minneapolis’s growing dance scene over the years.
Mr. Dubois hailed from Canada, where he grew up DJ’ing alongside his best friend and Attitude City Montreal co-founder David Shaw. Armed with a diverse span of music, Jeff was one of the first DJ’s to break the modern “electro” sound to the Twin Cities in early 2001. His first Minneapolis-released mix CD, “Electromix”, was influential and genre-defining for many aspiring local DJ’s at the time.
Collectively, Karl and Jeff pride themselves on being vinyl-only DJ’s
and true record collectors. Both DJ’s have been collecting records
for well over ten years and refuse to jump on the “Serato” laptop bandwagon. With a keen musical edge honed by years of fanatical crate diving, Attitude City’s international effort is to cut through the tenuous trends and genre-humping of the modern club scene. As they put it: “It’s as simple as introducing the sexy audio gems of bygone eras to handsome contemporary jams, getting them good and drunk, and letting them knock boots in your ears”.
Given four hours to flesh out a set, you can expect Attitude City to reach deep into their record crates, playing diverse and rare dance music that will easily span more than 30 years of evolution. Expect to hear everything from percussion-heavy disco to West Coast deep house, early 1980s Minneapolis funk and boogie, and danceable rock and new wave tunes made popular at the groundbreaking NY clubs Paradise Garage and The Loft.
