AC_MSP: Saturday November 29 @ Club Jager

Friday, November 28th, 2008

Thank You

Ooooof. What a great holiday! To our friends south of the Canadian border: Happy Thanksgiving to you and your families!

Now that the eating and family camaraderie is done, let’s work off our pounds by drinking and dancing at Club Jager. Ok… so maybe drinking won’t help with the pounds, but the disco, italo, boogie, electro, soul, and house music will.

Sooo… get your turkey-stuffed soul down to Club Jager this Saturday for some drunk, sloppy yet funky music thrown together with love by your favorite Canadian/Polish duo.

Attitude City: LOUD AS FUCK @ Shelter

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

We’re so excited to grace the decks at the penultimate installment of Shelter.

For those who don’t know, every Friday, living legend Zak Khutoretsky (aka DVS1) books one DJ (in our case two), to play a four hour set on a huge-ass sound system. Thanks to Zak’s precision rave-ears this will be — quite possibly — the loudest, best-tuned Attitude City event ever! No joke! We can hardly wait to tickle the bassbins with some fat 1980s disco kicks and synthesizer basslines.

If you are under 50 years old, this is practically a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to hear classic underground records on a system that was designed exclusively for dance music. If you are over 50, come relive those nights you spent binging on ‘ludes at David Mancuso’s Loft or the Paradise Garage. Either way, see you Friday…

The official release can be found here.

AC_MSP: Attitude City @ Shelter 11/21!

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008

Only 2 weeks left for shelter!!! Last Friday, Centrific brought us the 4 hour Bday session proper… This week promises to be another great 4 hour set by our good friends Karl who and Jeff Dubois aka ATTITUDE CITY. These 2 are no joke..their record collections seriously span more than most can comprehend. Together as ATTITUDE CITY they blur the lines between old and new, eclectic and classic. Come through and enjoy something you may have never experienced before its gone…

ATTITIDE CITY…4 hour set!!

Before there were Moon Goons, before there was Too Much Love, and before the recent hipster influx in MPLS there was Attitude City. DJs Karl Frankowski and Jeff Dubois have been throwing some of Minneapolis’ best dance parties collectively as Attitude City since early 2005 and can often be heard masterfully mixing classic disco, boogie, funk, electro, and house for a very loyal fan base. From planting a radio transmitter at the King & I and encouraging patrons to tune into their live sets tableside via vintage boomboxes to their annual fashion-focused Yacht Party soiree, Attitude City have been consistently putting a unique and amusing spin on an often overly-serious underground dance music scene.

Before the formation of Attitude City, both DJ’s were already highly accomplished and successful independently. Karl’s origins can be traced far back in the Minneapolis dance community. Formerly known as Karl Who, Mr. Frankowski was one of the most prominent house DJ’s in
the twin cities dating back to the late 90’s. His numerous club
appearances, masterful mixing techniques, and mixed CD’s have helped to shape and define Minneapolis’s growing dance scene over the years.
Mr. Dubois hailed from Canada, where he grew up DJ’ing alongside his best friend and Attitude City Montreal co-founder David Shaw. Armed with a diverse span of music, Jeff was one of the first DJ’s to break the modern “electro” sound to the Twin Cities in early 2001. His first Minneapolis-released mix CD, “Electromix”, was influential and genre-defining for many aspiring local DJ’s at the time.

Collectively, Karl and Jeff pride themselves on being vinyl-only DJ’s
and true record collectors. Both DJ’s have been collecting records
for well over ten years and refuse to jump on the “Serato” laptop bandwagon. With a keen musical edge honed by years of fanatical crate diving, Attitude City’s international effort is to cut through the tenuous trends and genre-humping of the modern club scene. As they put it: “It’s as simple as introducing the sexy audio gems of bygone eras to handsome contemporary jams, getting them good and drunk, and letting them knock boots in your ears”.

Given four hours to flesh out a set, you can expect Attitude City to reach deep into their record crates, playing diverse and rare dance music that will easily span more than 30 years of evolution. Expect to hear everything from percussion-heavy disco to West Coast deep house, early 1980s Minneapolis funk and boogie, and danceable rock and new wave tunes made popular at the groundbreaking NY clubs Paradise Garage and The Loft.

AC_MSP: Street Sounds Friday November 12

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

Party Yo!

Burlesque of North America, Attitude City, and l’Etoile Magazine proudly present the 2nd installment of Street Sounds Swirlin Through My Mind: a new monthly dance night dedicated to classic dance music from the mid 1970s – mid 1980s. Expect to hear everything from percussion-heavy disco to early Chicago house and acid tracks, early 1980s Minneapolis funk and boogie, and danceable rock and new wave tunes made popular at groundbreaking NY clubs Paradise Garage and The Loft.

On the turntables will be Karl Frankowski and Jeff Dubois, better known as stalwart Minneapolis DJs Attitude City. For several years, Attitude City has been throwing afterparties, warehouse jams, and their annual Yacht Club party, masterfully mixing classic disco and boogie, electro, house, and techno for a loyal fanbase. Joining Karl and Jeff will be DJ Mike the 2600 King & Winship of the BRLSQOTHEQUE Sound System. Mike is most well known for his funk and psychedelic mix CDs and uptempo dance remixes which have landed him gigs in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, Portland, and Seattle. He is also one of the two resident DJs at the monthly Baby Loves Disco event. Wes Winship, Mike’s partner at local graphic design and screenprinting studio Burlesque of North America, has been tearing it up at local parties Too Much Love, Hotel at Kitty Kat Club, and Burlesque’s own weekly Triple Double party at Triple Rock Social Club, spinning everything from Italo disco to contemporary electro.

As we’ve watched the local DJ and dance party scene explode over the last several years and have seen new DJs sprout up every week spinning all the hot new electro-clash, Baltimore club, and blog house remix-of-the-moment mp3s, Street Sounds will serve as a refreshing escape: a simpler brand of party with veteran DJs spinning timeless dance music.

Glass Candy

Portland’s Glass Candy started out as a glammed-out no wave/ discoband back in 1996, but over the years they have transformed into a full fledged dance “band”- leaving the live drummer behind and going 100% electronic. Taking cues from cosmic/space and Italo disco, Glass Candy take an organic approach to writing music, using all analogue gear and not a single computer. Comparisons have been drawn to Cerrone and Moroder for their approach towards making music without compromise. They have toured the USA seven times, released over 20 records in every possible format, and have a rabid fanbase throughout the world. Let’s tear the doors of this one (figuratively).
