New Mix – “From Deep to Disco”

October 20th, 2009

Deep Cats

On 9/11/2009 I had the opportunity to play at an incredible all-night party called “Future Classic” thrown by local legend DVS1… For those of you in the know in the Minneapolis/St. Paul area – parties like this mean that all music you hear is simultaneously punching you in the crotch via the infamous bass-mutating Hush Soundsystem…

I thought I’d take the opportunity to play an unusual slow, deep, bass-heavy set. I was really happy with the outcome, so I extracted the first 45 mins or so before it got kicked into “party mode” and thought I’d post it here for you.

Plenty of deep burners ala Todd Terje, The Revenge, Prins Thomas, Chicken Lips, etc…

It’s a large file so please give it some time to load or ‘right-click’ and ’save-as’ to download it to your computer:

New Edit for October: Time Bandits – Live It Up

October 17th, 2009

EditudeCity 9

Hi crew,

I’m excited to be posting the ninth installment in our EditudeCity edit/remix series. This one is a punchy, poppy remake of the Time Bandit’s 1982 Classic “Live It Up”. The band was formed in 1981 by Dutch born Alides Hidding, who wrote all songs and sang lead vocals. The band’s four albums made the charts all over the world, establishing a presence on the American dance music scene by topping the charts with this jam.

I’ve always had a sweet spot for this synth-heavy monster but several things make it tricky to play out in a club context: First, the original is extremely unquantized, making beat matching a distant reality for most DJ’s. Second, the guitar-ridden, overly-energetic uplifting chorus (which appears three times throughout the track) pushes the lines of cheesy in my opinion. Finally, the amazing breakdown at the end rarely gets heard as it doesn’t come in until the very end of the arrangement.

So, this version is now DJ friendly after being given the 4/4 quantization treatment. An entirely new kick drum has been compressed into the final mix for extra dance-floor punch. The track has been completely restructured to bring the incredible breakdown more to the forefront, as well as to build anticipation to one instance of the chorus versus three. Finally, extensive cuts, effects, and edits have been sprinkled throughout the arrangement to build anticipation and add some extra interest.

I hope you enjoy and share!

ATTITUDE CITY MONTREAL: Official Launch Night with Specialist of Guests, Jeff Dubois (MSP)

October 6th, 2009

Matches1

Hold onto your paper party hat, as things are about to get officially real. Real Talk(TM)

AC Mtl has been quietly wading in the weekly waters of Blizzarts for the last few weeks, tweaking record choices, tuning visuals, hanging banners and preparing for this Thursday.

You are emphatically invited to usher in the launch of our new weekly night, taking the best discoid jams from fore and aft and filtering them through the cheesecloth of good times, rump shakery and the tender brains of our most special DJ guests.

Touching down from Minneapolis on golden wings will be none other than Jeff Dubois, sultan of sonic sultriness. Jeff is the founding member of Attitude City minneapolis, has been DJing since the Olsen Twins were zygotes and knows how to set the roof of your brain on fire via vinyl and critically lauded edits.

This is bigg’un, so don’t hold back, tie up your shoes, tell your liver you’re sorry in advance and take your place as the godfather/mother of our new funky baby.

Edit for September: Mantus “Freestyle Rhythm” (Space Echo Edit)

September 16th, 2009

EditudeCity 8

This one has been completely re-worked and layered with a truck-load of sound-effects and synths. Please feel free to use and share…

Write-up per Mark Warren:

‘Freestyle Rhythm’, a 1979 New York radio hit, was the second single released by Mantus. As it so happens, it was also the very first appearance of John Benitez (better known as Jellybean) who is credited for mixing the song. However, I did not grow up in Brooklyn listening to WKTU. I had randomly stumbled upon this a few years back in a store of dusty, neglected records. The company picture sleeve displays mirror images of a bronzed-skin, hair-frenzied disco goddess wearing a skintight red and black striped body suit and the bold typography lays it all out: Disco, It’s Hot! I figured it was as least worth a listen.

From beginning to end, its balls to the wall disco. It’s got a nice party vibe without the unnecessary attitude. Its not well known and certainly not valuable, but I’ve always had a soft spot for that which
goes unnoticed. With repeated listening, I discovered elements I so very much loved in addition to those that weren’t so captivating. So its been thoroughly restructured and I have to admit that I have taken
the liberty of being anything but subtle about it.

AC MTL: Disco’s Ghost: An Evening of Classic House Music Fri,Aug28

August 26th, 2009

Disco’s Ghost
———————-

There once was a phantom of disco
With kids in Chicago and Frisco.
One day the old ghost
Struck out west for the coast
To connect with his grandson Francisco.

He found his way to a warehouse sized room
By tracking the 808’s boom.
He knocked three on the door,
And then four on the floor,
But the gate stayed as shut as a tomb.

Just beyond the door danced a fair crowd,
Though the house music playing so loud
Was the reason that ghost
Stood outside without host
To beckon him out of his cloud.

“These confounded children of mine,
With quantized drum rhythms in time,
Forget there’s a soul,
And a sub-bass they stole,
From Mancuso’s old musical shrine!”

But just at that moment a diva,
Arrived from a club in Geneva,
She let out a wail,
For some beats and some ale,
Else she level the place like the Shiva.

Suddenly the grand door opened up,
And Fran offered Disco a cup;
Saying, “sorry, Grandfather
But sometimes I rather
Mistake a ‘lock-down’ for lock-up!”
